Both have lost a lot. Let’s look at Russia first. She had a grand scheme to reassemble the Soviet Union. It appears to be in tatters. Her loss of troops is approaching 20,000. She has lost billions of dollars in military equipment.
However, her biggest losses are in prestige and respect
The first loss is prestige. The Russian military used to be feared. It used to be respected. No longer. The Emperor has no clothes. Putin has exposed the Russian military as weak and incompetent. Certainly not the world power everyone thought.
Let’s talk about respect. Soldiers are saying Putin ordered the war crimes. The bombing of maternity hospitals. Shelling of Children’s shelters. Execution of the elderly and women and children. Shot in the head with their hands tied behind their backs. Gang raping women and small girls. Whatever respect Russia may have gained since the fall of the Soviet Union has been squandered and lost by Putin.
Let’s move on to Ukraine. She has lost her countrymen. She has seen her country destroyed. She has seen her citizens exposed to war crimes and atrocities. But she has gained a lot.
She has gained the respect and admiration of the entire world.
She has a proven leader Who has the respite of the world and will lead her in the rebuilding process.
Most of all, Ukraine has shown the world how important her freedom is. She is willing to fight. To die. To see her homes destroyed. But in the end, she will have her freedom. Her children will have their freedom. And her grandchildren will have their freedom.
To repeat a quote of Churchill: “Nations that go down fighting rise again, but those who surrender tamely are finished.”
Ukraine is not surrendering tamely and even if defeated, will rise again. So who has lost the most in the war? The answer is easy-Russia.
